ARTIVISM

Artivism Dance Theatre aims to create dance theatre works with a social message. The company’s goal is to generate a discussion amongst its audiences and use dance theatre to express the necessity for open dialogue around important social issues.

Artivism is also a mentoring program/youth activism organization in which young performers with a desire to make an impact through their artistry can come together with professionals and collaborate. In this way, we strive to both produce work that speaks to the current social and political issues in our society and to create an environment where the next generation of artists can learn how to combine their passion for social justice with their love of dance theatre.

P.S. 4: SCAVENGERS

SCAVENGERS is a multi-disciplinary, collective art exhibition in and around the Art Klub complex running from November 16, 2017 - February 25, 2018.

The SCAVENGERS artists are united by a common interest in the value and life cycle of ordinary object. Scavengers give new life to what is discarded. They hunt for materials and gather ideas from their surroundings. They reconnect us to our culture and landscape by reimagining the materials they reclaim for their art.

Artists will participate in special programing to engage the local community and neighborhood, including evening performances, fashion shows, scavenger hunts, demonstrations and workshops for all ages.

KIDS BRASS BAND

Kids Brass Jam is a reoccurring educational program that teaches, mentors and inspires students through music instruction on trombone, trumpet, sousaphone and drums.

With the support of Threadhead Cultural Foundation, young musicians in the St. Roch neighborhood (Ages 9-17) participate in this exceptional 8-week session of percussion and brass band instruction with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Sessions are led by teaching musicians and members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The Foundation’s mission is “to protect, preserve, and perpetuate the musical traditions and heritage of New Orleans." We will be connecting the music with the culture that birthed it.  Students will explore from where the music came and how it has evolved over time, paralleled with the cultural evolution of our fine city New Orleans.

The final session of each series culminates in a public performance with the band at Art Klub.
